Sculpey Glaze - satin
Sculpey satin Glaze is a clear, water-based varnish specifically designed to protect polymer clay; however, unlike the glossy version, it gives pieces a soft, velvety, semi-matte finish. It is the ideal choice if you want to protect your piece and conceal surface imperfections without creating a shiny or glossy plastic look.
Proper Usage (Step-by-Step)
- Use a very soft brush: Choose a brush with soft, flat bristles (such as blending brushes or very soft synthetic ones) to ensure smooth paint application.
- Dilute with water: If the consistency feels too thick, add just a few drops of water to the container or dip the tip of the brush in water before blending; this helps the liquid flow and fill pores without leaving visible brush marks.
- Applying ultra-thin layers: Apply two to three very light coats, allowing 30 minutes for each coat to dry before applying the next. (Avoid applying a single thick coat, as it may peel later).
- Finger-application method (optional): Some crafters prefer wearing a medical glove and gently spreading the finish with their fingertips—especially on small, round pieces—to ensure a streak-free finish.
- Complete drying: Allow it to air-dry completely for 24 hours to ensure the protective layer sets properly.
Key Features and Uses of Sculpey satin Glaze
- Natural Finish: Reduces surface sheen, lending a sophisticated, realistic look to figurines, clay pieces, and clay-crafted plants.
- Superior Scratch Resistance: Tests have shown that the matte finish offers greater scratch resistance compared to the glossy version.
- Color Blending: You can mix mica powder or pigments directly into the varnish to create metallic or pearlescent effects with a soft glow.
- Full Compatibility: Serves as an excellent base or protective topcoat for water-based acrylic paints and various brands of clay.
